In order to become certified organic, beekeepers have to meet strict production standards and conditions. In general, management of honeybee colonies should respect the principles of organic production. The sources of nectar and pollen shall consist of organically produced plants and wild vegetation. Bee hives hould be separated by a buffer zone of 3 km clear from pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and genetically modified crops. Under Canadian law only HONEY CERTIFIED ORGANICcan be marketed with the word ‘organic’ on the label.
